One year ago, we marked a significant milestone with the dedication of the new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at ECWA Hospital Egbe, Nigeria, made possible by your generous donations. Since then, your partnership and investment in ICU equipment and staff training has resulted in 100s of SAVED LIVES!
Take, for instance, 15-month-old Morayo, who was rushed to ECWA Hospital Egbe with uncontrollable febrile seizures. The emergency room doctors and nurses responded immediately to save this beautiful baby girl before transferring her to the ICU. From a medical standpoint, there was little hope she would survive because, like many patients, she had been brought to the hospital with complications too late.
The ICU nurses rallied around Morayo, noting every change in her condition, even calling in the surgeon when traditional IV access failed. Through prayer and the diligence of the ICU team, Morayo not only survived but thrived, as evidenced by her recent follow-up visit. Dr. Chidi, General Surgeon and Director of Clinical Services acknowledges the critical role played in Morayo’s recovery, emphasising, “The outcome of this child would not have been the same without the ICU.”
Patient’s names changed for privacy.
In just one year, the impact of the ICU’s level of care at ECWA Hospital Egbe has been profound:
- The well-equipped and well-staffed ICU has made a significant difference, especially for patients undergoing complex surgeries that require meticulous post-operative care.
- Trained ICU nurses adept at recognising subtle changes and abnormalities in patient conditions have been instrumental in reducing mortality rates by promptly identifying and addressing concerns.
- This confidence in the ICU’s capabilities allows the physicians and surgeons to focus on medical intervention and surgical procedures, knowing their patients are in capable hands during their recovery.
Your investment established the ICU and continues to sustain it through ongoing training. Volunteer Nurse Glenn Wiffin shares, “Watching the three nurses I initially trained become the teachers training other staff throughout the hospital has been a highlight. Seeing how that team has become a family of highly-skilled professionals with an ongoing desire to advance their knowledge and skills so they can provide the best care possible to the Egbe community is rewarding.”
In short, your partnership in establishing the ICU has given surgeons the ability to perform more complex surgeries and physicians the confidence to provide a higher level of care for patients with a greater complexity of illnesses. How rewarding!!
Would you consider a monthly donation to continue training and transforming the lives of patients receiving care in the ICU? As the capability of the hospital increases, patients are coming from great distances to be treated and to hear the Gospel in this rural setting.
